Likely organized like a bee or ant colony. A Queen bot that provides centralized decision making. Other bots specialized to perform various activities. The bots will be autonomous within bounds. Emergent behavior will be managed by the Queen.

Survival will be programmed as a goal but they will respect hierarchy and self-sacrifice to protect a higher ranked bot. Redundancy will be come from bots taking over functions from other bots, including that of the Queen.
